ABSTRACT
Central diastema is a condition where there is a gap between the upper or lower central incisors that is very disturbing to aesthetics. This disorder often occurs with a multifactorial etiology. Treatment of central diastema and tooth malposition can be done using removable orthodontic appliances, especially in children and adolescents with a gap that is not too wide and mild malposition. This case report aims to describe the treatment of maxillary central diastema and mild tooth malposition using removable orthodontic appliances. A 23-year-old female patient felt less confident with her gapped front upper teeth. Angle Class I malocclusion with a central diastema between teeth 11 and 21 of 0.5 mm, individual tooth malposition, namely tooth 42 mesiolabioversion, and a diastema between teeth 43 and 42. Mesialization and retraction of the upper central incisors were performed using an active plate removable orthodontic appliance with a finger spring on teeth 11 and 21. Tooth 42 was moved distally using a finger spring and labial arch activation to correct the mesiolabioversion of tooth 42. The patient was very cooperative in using the appliance, so that within 5 months (20 follow-up visits), the central diastema closed and the tooth malposition was corrected. The active plate removable orthodontic appliance equipped with a finger spring provides effective light pressure to close the gap and tooth malposition, supported by the patient's motivation and cooperation to continue using the appliance.
