ABSTRACT
Digital transformation in healthcare has positioned electronic medical records (EMR)/electronic dental records (EDR) as important components in improving documentation quality, patient safety, and data utilization in dental services, including Dental and Oral Hospitals (RSGM). The aim of this study to map empirical findings from field-based studies on the implementation and use of EMR/EDR in dental services relevant to the RSGM context, identify patterns of challenges and implementation success factors, and formulate directions for strengthening EMR in RSGM. This study used a structured literature review through searches in PubMed, Scopus, and PLOS ONE, complemented by grey literature and hand searching, focusing on system implementation, data quality, interoperability, patient safety, and secondary use of data. A total of 30 selected articles were analyzed using a descriptive-thematic approach. The review identified five main clusters: implementation and organizational-human resource readiness, health data quality/dental EHR quality, secondary data use for surveillance and clinical outcomes, EHR-based patient safety, and interoperability with advanced analytics (algorithms/AI). EMR/EDR has strong potential to support clinical services, clinical education, quality management, and research in RSGM; however, its effectiveness depends greatly on data quality, documentation standardization, user competency, organizational support, and system interoperability. EDR has substantial potential; therefore, strengthening EMR in RSGM should be directed toward an integrated socio-technical approach to produce valid, secure, and useful data for decision-making.
