ABSTRACT
Children with intellectual disabilities have limitations in intellectual and motor skills, which makes it difficult for them to perform optimal dental cleaning. Therefore, they tend to have a high risk caries and ultimately affect their quality of life. This study aims to analyze the relationship between caries and the quality of life of children with mental retardation. This research is an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional approach. The population of research consisted of 80 mentally retarded students aged 6-22 years at Jember State Special School and Special School Type C TPA Jember. This research involves two main variables, namely dental caries measured by the DMF-T/def-t index and oral health-related quality of life assessed using the COHIP-SF 19 questionnaire. The relationship between the incidence of dental caries and quality of life was tested using the Pearson Correlation Test. The average dental caries Jember State Special School and Special School Type C TPA Jember are considered as high (5.27 and 5.03). The average quality of life for children with mental retardation are the moderate category (41.53 and 40.62). Dental caries and quality of life are correlated, according to Pearson correlation analysis, with p < 0.05. This study suggests the need for dental health promotion programs as an effort to reduce the incidence of caries in children with special needs.
