ABSTRACT
Children with autism are at a higher risk of oral health problems due to cognitive, motor, and sensory limitations, making parental guidance crucial. There is limited data on how specific parenting styles correlate with the oral hygiene status of autistic children in Jember. The aim of this study was to describe the parenting styles of parents and the oral hygiene status of autistic children at SLB Negeri Branjangan Jember. This research was a descriptive observational study with a cross-sectional design, conducted in May- June 2025. The sample consisted of 16 autistic students selected through purposive sampling. Parenting style data were collected using a questionnaire, while oral hygiene status was measured using the Oral Hygiene Index-Simplified (OHI-S). Data were analyzed descriptively. The democratic parenting style was the most dominant (43.75%). The average OHI-S score was 2.17, which falls into the "moderate" category. Descriptive analysis showed that the democratic parenting style was associated with the best oral hygiene outcomes, where 57.1% of children in this group had a "good" OHI-S score, whereas the permissive style was associated with the poorest outcomes. The majority of autistic children at SLBN Branjangan Jember have moderate oral hygiene. The democratic parenting style is the most dominant and appears to be the most supportive approach for maintaining good oral hygiene in this group.
