ABSTRACT
Oral inflammation is a natural body response to tissue damage commonly caused by trauma, irritation, or infection. Corticosteroids are used as anti-inflammatory agents, while chlorhexidine digluconate functions as an antiseptic. The combination of dexamethasone and chlorhexidine digluconate in a mouthwash formulation is still rarely found; therefore, its anti-inflammatory potential needs to be evaluated. This study was conducted to compare the potential anti-inflammatory activity of 0.01% dexamethasone, 0.2% chlorhexidine digluconate, and the combination of 0.01% dexamethasone with 0.2% chlorhexidine digluconate. A true experimental in-vitro study with a pre-test and post-test control group design was evaluated using the albumin denaturation assay to evaluate anti-inflammatory activity. Data were analyzed for normality and homogeneity, followed by One Way ANOVA. Dexamethasone 0.01% exhibited the strongest anti-inflammatory effect compared to the combination of dexamethasone with 0.2% chlorhexidine digluconate. Nevertheless, the combination still demonstrated measurable anti-inflammatory activity. The combination of dexamethasone and chlorhexidine digluconate shows potential as an anti-inflammatory with additional antiseptic benefits, although it does not enhance the anti-inflammatory effect compared to dexamethasone alone. These findings are limited to an in vitro albumin denaturation assay, and further studies are required before clinical application can be considered.
