ABSTRACT
Toothache is a common health problem in the community that can reduce an individual's quality of life. The high prevalence of dental problems, which is not accompanied by optimal utilization of healthcare services, has led many individuals to practice self-medication, particularly using analgesics. However, self-medication without adequate knowledge may lead to inappropriate drug use, adverse effects, and delayed proper treatment. Therefore, the level of knowledge plays an important role in influencing individuals in performing rational self-medication. This study employed an analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 109 respondents selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires to assess the level of knowledge and self-medication practices of analgesics for toothache. Data analysis was conducted using univariate and bivariate methods, with Spearman correlation test at a significance level of 0.05. The majority of respondents had a good level of knowledge (73.9%) and good self-medication practices (84.4%). The analysis revealed a significant relationship between the level of knowledge and self-medication practices of analgesics for toothache (p=0.001; r=0.326). The high knowledge level was influenced by educational background, younger age, and access to information. Good self-medication behavior was influenced by prior experience and perception of toothache as a mild condition. The weak positive correlation suggests that other factors such as attitude, belief, and environment also play a role. There is a significant relationship between the level of knowledge and self-medication practices of analgesics for toothache among the community in North Denpasar District.
