ABSTRACT
Oral health is an essential component of general health, while oral ulcers (canker sores) can cause pain and interfere with daily activities. The cemcem leaf (Spondias pinnata) has been used traditionally by the Balinese community and contains bioactive compounds with potential anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties. However, public knowledge regarding oral ulcers and the potential use of cemcem leaves still requires improvement. Research Objective: To determine the level of public knowledge regarding the use of cemcem leaves (Spondias pinnata) as a treatment for oral ulcers in Pesinggahan Village, Klungkung. This quantitative study employed a pre-experimental design using a one-group pretest-posttest approach. The study was conducted from August to September 2026 in Pesinggahan Village, Klungkung, Bali. A total of 108 participants with complete pre-test and post-test data were included in the analysis. Knowledge was assessed using a 15-item multiple-choice questionnaire administered before and after an educational intervention. Data were analyzed descriptively and through the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. Results: The mean knowledge score increased from 9.57 ± 2.35 in the pre-test to 11.26 ± 2.56 in the post-test, representing an increase of 1.69 points. The Wilcoxon test indicated a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores (Z = −7.473; p < 0.001). Specifically, 79 participants (73.1%) showed an increase in scores, 27 participants (25.0%) maintained the same scores, and 2 participants (1.9%) experienced a decrease in scores. There is a significant difference in the participants' knowledge level scores before and after the educational session regarding the use of cemcem leaves (Spondias pinnata) as a treatment for canker sores in Pesinggahan Village, Klungkung.
